A Euro 2016 chart with a little bit of a difference

It’s that time again, not not Christmas, but a major football tournament is almost here and as usual out come the commemorative sticker books and souvenir/special edition magazines complete with glossy wall charts and posters. One that always stands out from others is the When Saturday comes tournament wall chart, specifically for the style of illustration employed on it, drawn by magazine stalwart Dave Robinson.

wsc2His illustrations have been featured in When Saturday Comes, WSC for short, for over 20 years now and his style of drawing and humour it brings to the magazine has always been a highpoint. Used alongside articles that won’t find their way into the more mainstream glossy titles, written by mainstays like Harry Pearson, Roger Titford and Doug Cheeseman on a diversity of topics about football, across all divisions not just in the UK but also divisions and federations overseas, Robinson’s simple but beautifully crafted hand drawn illustrations provide a great accompaniment to some varied and interesting reading for anyone who wants a bit of wider view of football beyond the mega Sky-bucks atmosphere of the Premier League.

wsc3One of the main showcases for these illustrations is the commemorative posters produced by WSC for the big two tournaments, the Europen Championships and World Cup. On occasions comprising a sticker set, also illustrated by Dave Robinson, the poster not only gives the opportunity of showing off his characature abilites, mainly of the more recognised players and managers, but also carries through the visually pleasant design off the magazine, built as it has bene or several years now, on a three column layout iwth a plesing use of mainly serif fonts, again in comparison to the more shouty glossy magazines on offer.
