#BuyFontsSaveLives – Fonts for Cancer Research UK and Macmillan Cancer Support.

Here’s a nice idea and a worthwhile reason to buy nice fonts, if you ever needed one really – the new BuyFontsSaveLives section of the typespec website features three fonts for you to buy with the proceeds going to Cancer Research UK and Macmillan Cancer Support. Created by Haymarket creative director Paul Harpin, the project was inspired by his niece Laura, who sadly died aged just 26. Paul created a new typeface family named Laura to sell in her memory and now other type designers and experts are joining in to help raise money for both charities through the donation of fonts to sell on the typespec website.

Typespec’s Joe Graham, whose elder brother Carl died at the age of 34 of a brain tumour, is helping with the distribution of the campaign’s first font offerings which feature Laura, Heseltine (donated by Lord Heseltine), Mfred (designed by Matt Willey with assistance from Henrik Kubel at A2 -TYPE in honour of his father Nick) and Organon by Nick Cooke.

This, I think, is a great and novel idea to raise funds for two great charities and is certainly deserving of widespread support from not just designers and artists but also those who are just learning about design and have the opportunity to get hold of some great looking fonts at affordable prices, with the bonus of raising money for two deserving causes.
