Made in the Middle craft fair

Admittedly craft fairs aren’t my “usual kind of thing” but during the rain this afternoon I went into the Hereford Museum & Gallery to have a look and see what the “Made in the Middle” exhibition had to offer, and there were several pieces that did catch my eye and I would say were worth a look in particular.

The fair features craft from across the Midlands and runs until January the 2nd thanks to a partnership between Craftspace and mac birmingham, in collaboration with The National Centre for Craft & Design, with the possibility of  purchasing some of the pieces as well as the chance to commission the exhibitors in the fields of ceramics, glass, jewellery, metalwork, textiles, mixed media and work in wood, with one piece by Maggie Smith being the feature piece of the fair’s promotional artwork.

Those who stood out for me, as well as Maggie Smith’s superb wood basket weaved pieces, were Karina Thompsons striking “60 Beats a Minute”, Janette Matthews fabric designs, Imogen Luddy, Norman Cherry and some very nice glass sculptures by Charlotte Clark. In a nice touch the exhibition also utilised QR Codes to take the viewer to individual pages on the Made In The Middle website that give more information about the exhibitor and some of the process and techniques used to create the pieces on display, as well as a free “Stirring The Swarm” app created by Anna Collette Hunt that invites the user to step into the role of an entomologist who has been chasing an escaped swarm which can be downloaded from iTunes.

You can find out more about the exhibition by visiting the associated websites at Craftspace, Flickr and Made in the Middle.
